Pursuant to its authority in Wis. Stat. Ch. 977, the Wisconsin State Public Defender Board promulgates administrative rules to implement, interpret, or make specific legislation enforced or administered by the agency or to govern the organization or procedure of the agency.
The Public Defender Board oversees the Office of the Wisconsin State Public Defender and appoints the State Public Defender to lead the agency. The board consists of nine members appointed to three-year terms by the Governor with the advice and consent of the State Senate. At least five of the nine must be members of the State Bar of Wisconsin.
