MILWAUKEE – The Wisconsin State Public Defenders on Thursday recognized outstanding staff members, private bar attorneys and community organizations that have gone above and beyond in their service to SPD clients and their commitment to the mission and values of the SPD.
The Public Defender Board presented its highest honor, the Eisenberg Award, to the Ostara Initiative, a women-led organization that has gained national recognition for its groundbreaking efforts to transform the experience of incarcerated mothers and pregnant people. Its programs provide prenatal care, access to doula support, and postpartum resources to reduce trauma and improve health outcomes for both mothers and children. Earlier this year, the Ostara Initiative brought its work to Wisconsin with the launch of the Wisconsin Prison Birth Project. The Eisenberg Award is presented annually to organizations that provide exceptional service and improve the lives of people involved in the criminal justice system.
“The Ostara Initiative is meeting a crucial need in Wisconsin by bringing compassion and care to pregnant people who are incarcerated,” Public Defender Board Chair Ellen Thorn said. “We are excited to see their innovative work flourish in our state.”
The 2025 Berkos Award, which recognizes private bar attorneys that have provided extraordinary service to SPD-appointed clients and is named in honor of long-serving former board chair Danny Berkos, was awarded to Oren Jakobson of Community Law S.C., Aileen Henry of Henry Law Offices, and John Wasielewski of Wasielewski and Erickson.
The Chiarkas Award, bestowed upon an SPD staff member who demonstrates exceptional leadership, was given to Breanna Magallones, an assistant state public defender in SPD’s Rhinelander Office. Described by her co-workers as the “heart of leadership” in her office, Breanna has been a mentor, a trailblazer and a tireless advocate for indigenous youth in the criminal justice system.
The After-Hours Community Service Award was awarded posthumously to Jessa Nicholson Goetz, a prominent Wisconsin defense attorney who passed away earlier this year. Jessa is remembered for the countless hours she devoted to service, mentoring and civic engagement.
“These awards recognize the tireless work of so many attorneys and advocates across the state to support our clients. I’m grateful to all the staff members, private bar partners and community organizations that embrace our mission of providing high-quality defense and challenging injustice,” State Public Defender Jennifer Bias said.
